A Declaration of Dependence

Drawn from the witness of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, and renewed in our own generation.

From Bishop Fulton J. Sheen

We must have a Declaration of Dependence — dependence on God — if we are ever to have true independence. Independence on the political level was the gift of our Founding Fathers; but it rested upon a deeper foundation: the conviction that there is a God to whom we owe all that we are and all that we have.

A nation forgetful of God soon becomes a nation tyrannical toward man. Where God is denied, the State assumes the place of God, and freedom — true freedom — is lost.

Men have forgotten God; that is why all this has happened.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Templeton Address, 1983

Our Concluding Pledge

We must declare together our dependence on God as the foundation of our true independence from unjust governance in every generation. We must pledge our solidarity to one another and commit ourselves to working together for the true common good.

We pledge ourselves to defend the dignity of every human person, to honor and strengthen marriage and the family, to uphold the freedom of conscience, and to bind ourselves to our neighbor in works of solidarity and love.
